Private mortgage insurance (pmi) is an insurance policy that you, the borrower pays on behalf of the bank to protect them against default. PMI is required on most loans when the borrower finances more than 80% of the purchase price. If the borrower defaults, the bank collects their loss from that insurance company that they require you to pay for. Since it is private, a borrower’s bank can get the insurance from many private sources and charge the consumer.
